Issue 002 of For Reference Only is dedicated entirely to the shoes found in FRANK, a now-defunct Women’s fashion magazine that published on a monthly basis between 1997-1999. The complete run is available to browse in our Reference Library. For Reference Only is an irregular dispatch of visual research: a series of papers compiling visual references loosely gathered according to a theme, and sourced from books in the Reference Point Library collection. This publication is intended to function simultaneously as a reconfigured library catalogue and image repertoire for researchers, inviting you to approach your research through chance correspondence and accidental encounters. We hope this lends itself to new ways of reading the contents of a library; but also, as an opportunity to gather that which is useful to you, stands out, pleases you, or to which you might feel some sort of affinity; enough so that it be rescued from the mass of ‘things,’ displayed and held in higher regard, for a moment - until perhaps, it is no longer of use. Each copy comes wrapped in white waxed tissue paper with a grid pattern washi paper tape.

‘Private 2: Emma’ is an candid story-portrait of model Emma Sugimoto by Japanese photographer Shunji Okura. The publication features over 50 black and white photographs, both portraits and nudes, scenes from daily life, in a soft, blurred and grainy monochrome – a sentimental and intimate example of erotic Japanese photography from the 1970s. You fall through the hole in the cover and tumble down at terminal velocity right out the other side. It's a mammoth work, of dizzying detail and elegance - every page is a surprise and a delight but never a gimmick. More than any book we've ever seen, its medium, content and playfulness work in spellbinding harmony. Its sum is greater than its parts, which is saying something because its parts are truly great. Words do not do this book justice, nor do pictures, videos or love songs. The only way to understand it is to see it in person.

In Wolfe's first book–a collection that launched its author as America’s foremost entertainer with something to say–Tom Wolfe took a sharp-eyed look at the American scene of the early 1960s and zeroed in on the exotic forms of status-seeking that flourished across the country from New York to Los Angeles. He observed the emergence of intriguing art forms and styles of life that had nothing to do with the “elite” culture of the past. In the Low Rent world of the Twist, bouffant hairdos, stock car racing, and rock concerts he found not only a uniquely American energy but also an American aesthetic. The condition is very fine and has very little marks, it also comes with a dust cover.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is a memoir by Dave Eggers released in 2000. It chronicles his stewardship of his younger brother Christopher "Toph" Eggers following the cancer-related deaths of his parents. Very fine condition with accompanying dust cover.

First Edition. Many consider this work by Crowley to be the foremost book on ceremonial magic written in the twentieth century. It was written especially for beginners as Part 3 of Book 4 (Liber ABA). The original was privately printed in 1929 after Crowley failed to find a publisher in London. The condition is very fine for such an important and infamous book.

At around 80 pages, The Eye is Nabokov's shortest novel. Nabokov himself referred to it as a 'little novel' and it is a work that sits somewhere around the boundary between extended short story and novella. It was produced during a hiatus in Nabokov's creation of short stories between 1927 and 1930 as a result of his growing success as a novelist. As in many of Nabokov's early works, the characters are largely Russian émigrés relocated to Europe, specifically Berlin. Condition is very good and little to no marks.

A Walk in the Night and Other Stories reveals La Guma as one of the most important African writers of his time. These works reveal the plight of non-whites in apartheid South Africa, laying bare the lives of the poor and the outcasts who filled the ghettoes and shantytowns. A walk in the night follows the story in which the collection takes its name from, A Walk in the Night, relates the story of a young man who is overtaken by the oppression of apartheid as he walks through the night to calm his nerves after being unjustly fired by his white supervisor. Very fine condition, little to no marks on the front or back cover.

Wonderfully kitsch, overwhelmingly strange, sex tips from a time gone-by. This book is profusely illustrated with charming drawing. Wonderful mix and match with sex position section at the back with tracing paper and cartoonish members. Precision technique. Chapter on the joys of genetil washing. Pre porn era. Great condition however some small tears on the front cover.

Even as a child, Sammy Younge, Jr. saw the struggle for equal rights as a personal challenge. A political science student at prestigious Tuskegee Institute, he became a leader in the student Civil Rights Movement. Demonstrations were touched off on January 4, 1966 when it became known that Sammy, age 21, had been shot and killed by a gas station attendant. James Forman knew Sammy personally, and tells the young martyr's story through interviews with family and friends. Condition is very good, however some scuffs and marks on the front cover.

A short collection of lengthy poems. Ginsberg has matured as an artist, and most of these poems are retrospective - Though there's still plenty of take no prisoners agitprop political poems. Condition is very fine.

The noted entertainer details the circumstances of his son's sudden joining of a religious enclave, the reasons involved, and the effects on his family and discusses the wider social context of cults and their converts. Condition is very fine, accompanying dust cover.

Wonderland Avenue: Tales of Glamour and Excess, first published in 1989, is the personal memoir of late author and The Doors' publicist Danny Sugerman, who went on to manage Ray Manzarek's solo-career. Great read for people with any interest about Manzarek or

The Corrections is a 2001 novel by American author Jonathan Franzen. It revolves around the troubles of an elderly Midwestern couple and their three adult children, tracing their lives from the mid-20th century to "one last Christmas" together near the turn of the millennium. Condition is very good.

In this thrilling McInerney classic, a transsexual prostitute accidentally propositions his own father. A senator's serial infidelities leave him in hot water. And two young lovers spend Christmas together high on different drugs. Discover a world of sex, excess and urban paranoia where worlds collide, relationships fragment and the dark underbelly of the American Dream is exposed. Fulls of twists and turns, we believe this book is a must for readers and writers alike. Condition is very fine.

The Stratagem and other Stories is a small book of short stories written by Aleister Crowley, occult magician, poet and self-proclaimed prophet. The book was originally published in 1929 and one of a series of Crowley's works to be published by Mandrake Press after a period in which Crowley found it difficult to publish due both to his lack of funds, and his notoriety. Mandrake Press also published The Confessions of Aleister Crowley volumes I and II, and Moonchild. Fine condition, accompanying dust cover.

Black comedy about Hakim Felix Ellellou, ex-dictator of Kush, a fictional Islamic state in Sub-Saharan Africa, narrates the history of his life and his rule over his former desert empire from his current exile in France. With his drought ridden country ever on the verge of a humanitarian crisis, Ellellou's troubles begin when the hated Americans begin sending food aid to his starving people. The crazed dictator has the crates of food burned to keep out the Americans but his second-in-command turns against him, secretly negotiating a deal with the United States for rights to the country's oil. Condition is very fine, comes with dust cover.
